Credence Table

The Credence Table in the chancel was the original altar in the Queen's Chapel and was also saved from the Christmas Eve fire of 1806. The credence table is currently to the right of the altar. It was made from the oak timbers of the USS Hartford, the flagship of David G. Farragut. This table was presented to St. John's Church by Gustavus V. Fox, Assistant Secretary of the United States Navy during the Civil War. Admiral Farragut died in the Portsmouth Navy Yard and his funeral was held in St. John's Church August 17th, 1870.
