Mrs. Lela Heckscher Niemi, Communications Director
Lela Heckscher Niemi is Director of Communications for St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Plymouth State College (now University) in Plymouth, NH. She and her husband, Paul, live in Hampton, NH and are the parents of two young children, Elijah (‘03) and Maija (‘06). She has been a freelance graphic designer since 1993 and held several graphic design positions in the seacoast over the past 15 years including Sir Speedy, Signal Graphics, Willey Brothers, Russound and Royal Design. She moved to Portsmouth from Philadelphia in 1978 at the age of 7 and attended school in Portsmouth. She and her family have been members of St. John's since the early ‘80s. She and her husband were married by the previous rector of St. John's, The Rev. Tim Rich, in June of 1999 and both of their children have been baptized at St. John's.
Lela began giving of her time and talent in December of 2007 with the monthly newsletter, The News from Church Hill. Mrs. Niemi is responsible for church-wide communications including the public relations for St. John’s, formation brochures, website, newsletter, weekly bulletins and other promotional materials. She works in conjunction with church clergy and staff as well as church ministries and committees to streamline web and printed materials that clearly project St. John’s mission of radical hospitality to all.
