In our society, the line between childhood and adulthood is often a fuzzy one. Unlike other cultures, we don’t have formalized rites of passage that define the points along the path to adulthood. We need ways to tell our young people they are making progress; they are growing and learning; they are becoming adults. The Journey to Adulthood program that we use attempts to do just that.

During the regular 10:30 service on Sunday, May 18, we will celebrate an important Rite of Passage with eleven of our teens. This liturgy is formally called The Celebration of Manhood and Womanhood, but is more well-known as "Rite-13" since it takes place near the candidate’s 13th birthday-much like a bar mitzvah.

During the ceremony, we recognize the gift of womanhood or manhood that God bestows on each one of us. This is a gift from God that we cannot earn and need not prove. This gift is the essence of who we are. As we grow and mature in the journey to adulthood, our knowledge and skills increase, but the magical core of who we are remains the same.

The teenagers we will celebrate and recognize on May 18th are:

Eliza McLeod
Christopher Latimer
Jack Constantine
George Segee-Wright

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare. Please plan to be with us to witness this important event on Sunday, October 21st during the 10:30 service.

St John's Guild Auxiliary will be meeting Tuesday May 20th at 10:00 am in Thaxter Hall. Ginny Edwards

Holly Hill Fair - Get Involved!: You are cordially invited to attend the first meeting of the Holly Hill Fair Committee, Tuesday, May 27th at 6:30 pm in the Philbrick Room of Thaxter Hall. We will be assigning Table Captains, discussing the three goals of this year's fair, exchanging ideas on ways we can better achieve those goals, developing the table layout and committing to next steps. If you have any interest in the fair, please don't miss this fun meeting! Tea and snacks provided.

The Economy Shop: The shop will be closing for the summer months after Wednesday May 28th and will open again in September so you have but three weeks to claim your bargains for the summer months. As in other years we will accept donations up to the closing date but we also request that you hold all donations after the 28th until the last of August, we have very little storage space. Thank you for all the donations that we have received over the last eight months and for your continued support for THE HOUSE OF JOHN. Have a great summer, Joan & Bob Alessi, Karen and all of our helpers.

Altar Flowers: The flower memorial sign up sheet is in the narthex. Dates are available throughout the year to remember your loved ones, to celebrate and honor special occasions. Contact Ginny Edwards for any questions, 207-439-2119 or e-mail edwardsga@msn.com.

Stewardship of the Earth: Dr. John Carroll's sermon on Sunday was wonderful – very thought provoking and challenging. Carole Renselaer has a copy if you would like to read it.

To celebrate Mother's Day and Arbor Day, we are selling seedlings (8"-12") donated by Ed and Verdi Johnson. Be sure to thank them, too! We will be selling mountain ash, yellow twig dogwood, arrow-wood northern dogwood, red oak, red pine, northern white cedar and others. A. J. Dupere, Community Forester at the Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth recommended these as appealing and hardy for this area!

Sunday, June 22 will be our BIKE/WALK/CARPOOL to church day. Start planning: start biking or walking and be sure to ask family or friends to join you – get fresh air, exercise, have fun and help the environment! Papa Wheelies will loan us a bike rack just for the event! Please take time to thank them!

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 13th from 9:30am-11:30am in Thaxter Hall next to the church. For more information, please call Carole Renselaer: 603-433-9903 or Judy Sabin: 603-431-2542

1. Car - put one near the front seat until is becomes a habit and then you can store it in the trunk.
2. Traveling - pack one in your luggage – they come in handy for shopping, going to the beach, etc.
3. Gift bags – don’t buy any fancy ones anymore – use these and you are giving two gifts!
4. Buy extras to use for #3 and… give to family and friends.
5. Wine- forget the paper wine bags! Use a green one, wrap it around (for protection, too) and tie with natural jute.
6. Store newspapers for recycling – easy to carry and unload!

Stewardship of the Earth:

Dr. John Carroll says:

On Sustainability:

Sustainable behavior is that which is socially responsible and economically viable, so designed and implemented that it can be continued indefinitely, without exhausting resources, without corrupting its environment, and without impoverishing its practitioners. An activity is sustainable if it can be continued indefinitely. Sustainability requires a change in our fundamental values; it requires us to be fundamentally countercultural and revolutionary. It is, in essence, as a monk of my acquaintance once told me, a "conversion experience". For not simply to alter how we do things but to change the value presupposition of why we do things is a conversion of the deepest kind.

On Spirituality:

The word "spirituality" refers to the condition of being of the spirit. The spirit is that which seeks transcendence, mystery, the other, that which seeks the BIG picture. It provides an essential faith in the future, a grounding for hope. It gives us the determination to persist and prevail. When we lose our cosmology, that is, our relation to the whole, to that BIG picture, we get small and we settle for shopping malls.

In conclusion:

I knew a priest who used to end Catholic Masses not with the more common expression, "Go in peace", but with the much more challenging expression, "Go forth and make a difference". It is up to each one of you to determine what that means for you. But while you’re reflecting on that, don’t fail to consider the very old, popular and meaningful saying, "Actions speak louder than words". Will you, then, go forth and make a difference?

Announcements

Coffee Hour: Please join us in Thaxter Hall following the 10:30am service for coffee and snacks. To provide volunteer or donation support, please call Danielle Mojonnier at 603-867-8605.

Altar Flowers: The flower memorial sign up sheet is in the narthex. Dates are available throughout the year to remember your loved ones or to celebrate or in honor of special occasions. Contact Ginny Edwards for any questions, 207-439-2119 or e-mail edwardsga@msn.com.

Stewardship of the Earth:

Not to be missed! Dr. John Carroll returns… to give the sermons on Sunday, May 4 at the 8am and 10:30am services. He is professor of Environmental Resources at UNH and the topic will be "Sustainability and Spirituality". (He spoke about this at one of the adult forums).

If you missed the Portsmouth Sustainability Fair Saturday, be sure to come next year - it was so much fun!! We had a table along with the Interfaith Sustainability Team and the fair was fantastic. With 70 groups participating, there was so much to see and learn about taking care of our fragile earth.

Make sure your bike is working well or… think who you would like to ask to drive with you to church or... get your sneakers out because we’re planning another bike/walk/carpool to church Sunday. As soon as we have a definite date, we will let you know.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 13 from 9:30am – 11:30am in Thaxter Hall. Come and share your ideas – we are always looking for new members!
