Seacoast Queer Choir: Singing Toward Freedom

  • St. John's Episcopal Church 100 Chapel Street Portsmouth, NH, 03801 (map)

On Friday, November 21 at 7PM, the Seacoast Queer Choir, directed by Maggie O’Neill, will present “Singing Toward Freedom: A Concert Honoring Trans Lives.”

WHY QUEER CHOIR?

Communal Singing can serve as Community Healing! There are some things we can’t do on our own, like community healing. Many people attend worship for that, but queer folks from unaffirming traditions often carry spiritual wounds that make attending traditional worship a barrier. Queer choir is designed as an offering to bridge the gap of community care that exists for folks of diverse genders, sexual orientations, and abilities who might not have access to communal singing in an affirming space.

WHY ST. JOHN'S?

St. John’s has shown care for the LGBTQ+ community by not merely signaling acceptance, but by supportive action. The signing of an open letter addressing the slate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the State Legislature last spring is a perfect example. This kind of on-record action builds trust in communities who have been harmed or rejected by institutions of faith in the past. The rich musical community at St. John's is uniquely positioned to open its doors to queer folks who are seeking a musical home.
