Rector's Message on COVID-19 from Sabbatical

In these uncertain and strange times, I wanted to simply let you all know what is going on with the Stevens family.  Firstly, we are all doing well.  Secondly, we are in the United States and never did make our planned trip to New Zealand. Currently, we are in FL with my parents simply praying for all and being grateful for the time together.

If I have learned anything on this sabbatical it is that the saying my grandmother taught me is true, “If you want to make God laugh…Tell God your plans.”  Please know that SJC is constantly in my prayers.  I miss you all tremendously and have been reminded over and over again how fortunate we are to have this community… even when we must remain physically distant.

My gratitude for the staff and vestry (and the Bishop!) as well as all of SJC is overwhelming.  I am so grateful for the gentle yet clear leadership they continue to provide our beloved community.  I urge each of us to be kind to ourselves during this stressful period and pray that we may be our best selves in the midst of crisis.

I read this verse from Psalm 57 during morning prayer the other day and it has stuck with me and has become my mantra during this time… may it bring you comfort as well.

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful,

for I have taken refuge in you;

in the shadow of your wings will I take refuge

until this time of trouble has gone by.

I love you all very much and look forward to reconnecting soon!
