Connected in story, connected in christ

belonging - ken hale

Tell us a Story about....

Recall the story of when you knew this church was yours.

When I Knew I Belonged

A story about belonging at St. John's by Kenneth Hale:

I began attending services at St John's in 1992 (Father Allen was the rector) and joined St John's in the early 2000's.

One of the first groups I was involved with, was the Men's Group, led by Dick Davidson. One year I invited my parents (Joan & Fred Hale) to a Mother's Day Breakfast. Knowing that I would be busy at the door, greeting attendees, I asked if Bertha Rocray would mind sitting with my parents until I was free to join them and enjoy the breakfast.

When I did join Bertha and my parents, I found the three of them in lively conversation, more spirited than one would expect from such a short acquaintance. Upon seeing my surprised face, Kimberly, Bertha's daughter, acknowledged that they all went to school together. Turns out that Mom attended, and Dad & Bertha graduated (some years apart) from the same college. This common background detail escalated a chance encounter to a meaningful exchange.

Although considering the numerous institutions of high learning in New Hampshire, this may not be so unusual. It served to me, as a real connection to St John's and that I knew I was attending the 'right' church. A belonging I am reminded of often, sitting two pews behind Bertha and Dick, regularly at the 8:00 Service.
