Sermon Series
"Counting Toward Wholeness"
The Rev. Aaron B. Jenkyn
This week’s sermon reflects on the Parable of the Lost Things and what these stories reveal about God’s love and our life together. At the heart of these parables is the truth that God never stops searching until all are gathered in and the circle is whole. We’re invited to take stock of our own lives and communities, to notice who is missing, and to join God in the work of noticing, searching, healing and restoring.
MUSIC
“My Shepherd will supply my need,” arr. Peter Urquhart; featuring the St. John's Parish Choir, under the direction of Peter Urquhart. Featured Offertory Anthem at the 10:00am Rite II Service of Holy Eucharist on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
COMMUNITY BOOK RECOMMENDATION
In response to this week’s sermon, several parishioners recommended Henri Nouwen’s classic The Return of the Prodigal Son. Drawing on Rembrandt’s famous painting and the parable itself, Nouwen reflects on what it means to be lost, to be found, and to be embraced by God’s love.
I haven’t read this one myself yet, but I’m looking forward to diving into this “new-to-me” book. If you too would like to continue exploring themes of mercy, belonging, and wholeness, I invite you to read along with this community recommendation, and let me know what you think.
Autumnal Equinox: Guided Meditation and Sound Bathing
Monday, September 22 from 5:30-7:00pm
Explore Sound Bathing and Meditation with Liz Ridgely
Musician and mystic Liz Ridgely will offer a full-sensory evening of guided meditation and sound bathing right here at St. John's. Liz will introduce ways to mark the turning of the seasons at the Autumnal Equinox, celebrating balance, renewal, and the divine presence in our lives.
This offering is the first in a new series of special events hosted at St. John’s that explore the intersection of physical wellness and spiritual practice. In the busyness of daily life, we are so often pulled away from the ministry of presence; this evening invites you to pause, breathe, and let your heart catch up with your mind and your body.
Cost: $30 (set by the facilitator to cover the program)

HYBRID FORMATION OPTIONS AVAILABLE
Thanks to the generous support of a St. John's "Angel Donor," our Philbrick Room is now outfitted with state of the art Zoom Room Technology, which allows us to bring some of our formation programming, previously available in-person only, to the wider St. John's community that is unable to come to the hill for any reason. Note: all times listed below are Eastern Times.
Right now, programs offering hybrid participation via Zoom are:
Exploring Loss: Tuesdays from 3-4pm
An informal peer-to-peer group for St. John’s parishioners and close friends that discusses the death of a person in one's life and the ensuing loss experience. Contact: Sally Murphy
Reading Between the Lines: Wednesdays from 10:30am-12:00pm
Using a resource entitled Reading Between the Lines, we'll use one text from the Sunday lectionary and examine the story as found in the Bible. Next, we see how the story is happening in the world around us, and then look at how the story is an event in our own lives. Contact: Diane Harvey
To receive the Zoom link for any St. John's hybrid program, you may reach out to the group contact person, or click here to email Christine Hudson, Parish Administrator.
